This video shows a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Mexico discussing about post knee surgery care and recovery time involved.
Following is the video narration:
“After the knee replacement the patient needs to do a very complete rehabilitation program because what we need to is for the patient to regain the movement as normal as it was before. That’s going to be acquired by moving the knee and flexing and extending and that’s why we have rehab program.
One of the main things that need to be worked on immediately after the surgery we are very keen on our patients to start moving and flexing as they tolerate. Also that’s going to help to prevent any other complications that can arise around a joint replacement such as a blood clot that can form in the veins.
That’s one very important thing that need to do after surgery, start early movement and we always protect our patients with medication to prevent those sort of complications such as a blood clot. After the surgery we leave the sutures, the wound for an approximate time of 2-3 weeks, depending on the healing progress in the patient.
After that those sutures are removed and the patient by then should be walking with the help of a walker or another sort of means that the patient has to be walking using his joint replacement. He can actually start moving and bearing weight on his knee right after the surgery. The rehab, it’s not a slow process as one might think. The aim of the whole procedure is to have to patient moving around quickly and that’s what’s going to help the patient to have a better recovery of faster and better recovery.
So definitely exercise is very important on that. It’s also very important to keep in mind that a joint replacement, it’s never going to be the same as once natural knee, so we do need to take good care of the knee replacement.
That means we have to take care of our body weight. We have to take care of activities that are going to be done, try to avoid excess of forces to the knee so that we will give a more time of life to that knee replacement. One always takes a number, we say that a knee replacement has a life of around 10-15 years, after it’s been applied on, so that’s the time that the patient is going to be free of pain and without any setbacks.
If we do that and the patient that’s around 50 years, we are hoping that he’s going to reach 65 without any problems and by then there may be the necessity of doing a revision or changing the implant, in some cases. So its very very important for the patient to keep in mind that they have to take care of their knee after the surgery.”
